A New Photograph of a Successful Weapon of War
In this combination print, Fichter brings together seemingly disparate images into a single, surreal composition. The uncanny imagery compares lumbering tortoises to a World War I tank while a plant’s stems look remarkably like traces of a bomb blast. Produced during the Vietnam conflict and amidst Cold War anxiety, the artist suggests commentary on the pervasiveness of war.

Negative Figure and Moonscape
At the time of this work’s creation, only a couple of years had passed since the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. NASA’s lunar missions, which continued until 1972, received worldwide notice and national enthrallment, giving generous fuel to science fiction, futuristic fashion, and creative expression. The moon was thus a subject of interest for many artists.
This image was made with the cyanotype process, named for its cyan blue prints and typically employed to copy notes and drawings, especially architectural blueprints. Within this work, the blue and white of the cyanotype evoke space and sky.
